City + Data is the fourth iteration of a student run Wintersession & IAP Series led by RISD, Brown, MIT, and BU STEAM. It will meet every Saturday from January 7th to January 28th 2017, hosted by Brown and RISD STEAM in Providence and MIT and BU STEAM in Boston/Cambridge.
The city is the most interdisciplinary of spaces, bringing questions of environment, transport, economics, civic design, and more. But as cities get more complex and citizens provide and upload more data about their experiences, we must reconsider how big data defines a city and functions within this space. How do we harness and share this data? How do we use it to drive innovation? How do we make it accessible and open? This workshop series will combine data science, visual art, augmented reality, and software development to drive urban and civic innovation. Over the course of this series, we’ll hack, think about, and use quantitative and qualitative data to transform our understanding of city government, the Internet of Things, and the urban environment. Students will read about and discuss urban theory and design, exploring the design of the city, its architecture, and its citizens - culminating in a final exhibition at RISD, GD Commons.
Along with the workshop series, there are also events around BU, RISD, & Brown that will be open for the public to attend!
